The story unfolds on Draco, a distant planet shared by dragons and human colonists who arrived from an overpopulated Earth a century ago, only to lose all contact with their homeworld. Since then, the settlers have struggled against a devastating disease known as Crimsonscale. The protagonist, a resident of the New Amara colony, is one of the rare few to survive the affliction, an ordeal that leaves them able to tame and ride the planet's dragons. Recognizing this gift, the colony's government drafts the protagonist into their Seeker defense forces. Under orders from superiors Sana and Cadmus, the newly minted rider is sent to hunt down a fearsome dragon called White Phantom, a creature spreading Crimsonscale among the lesser dragons. So begins a perilous campaign across the skies of a troubled world.
